27/12/10 - Press Release: WTS strengthens its French team and develops a VAT expertise

WTS, that is already present in nearly 30 countries (Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc.. but also in China and India) and quickly expanding its network in more than 90 countries, is now strengthening its French team by developing its VAT practice.

Alain Charlet joined WTS in November 2010. He is a tax attorney-at-law and worked two and a half years in the Consumptions taxes Unit of the OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration headed by Jeffrey Owens. From 2002 to 2008 he worked as a tax lawyer for Arthur Andersen International and Landwell & Associés, the correspondent law firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Alain has studied law in France, Canada (McGill University) and in the USA. He holds two French Masters in taxation and corporate law from the Université Jean Moulin Lyon III and an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.

He specialises in international tax issues, with a particular focus on VAT, banking and financial issues and tax litigation.

Alain has published several articles in English and in French in specialised law reviews including Tax Notes International, the International VAT Monitor, the Tax Journal, the International Tax Review, Droit Fiscal or Option Finance. He has also written a chapter in a book published by the IBFD in 2009: “Value Added Tax and Direct Taxation - Similarities and Differences” and contributed to a report for the French stock exchange commission. He has presented at several conferences and seminars either for the OECD or the French branch of the International Fiscal Association (IFA).

VAT is a particularly complex and formalistic tax. The issues at stake are strategic: not only for our clients who operate globally but also for those who have a limited right to deduct VAT. For them: VAT is a cost (e.g. the banking and financial institutions).

WTS, with the support of its dynamic network (WTS Alliance and a number of local partners), is committed to provide rigorous, independent and integrated tax advises that meet the needs of our clients.
